Erika learned pine needle basketry techniques in Mendocino from Carolyn Zeitler. The needles can be dyed or used with their natural chestnut color, and are bunched into uniform "coils" and bound with rafia. The stitching can be used to introduce fine design elements, such as "birds", or "corn". Erika collects her needles (usually Coulter pine) in Idyllwild, California.
